Seventy percent of our design build contracts are federal and state funded projects with stringent performance verification testing and training requirements. These requirements are dmanding at final completion of the project but the proven results are satisfied customers. Our record speaks for itself. We average over fifty new construction projects and over three hundred HVAC service projects per year. Our wholesale operation, The Energy Management Warehouse, maintains a large stock of inventory to support our customer needs for renovation, service and repairs.

ECS History
The company began as Environmental Controls Services and later merged with another closely held company, Expressions In Type, Inc., which was involved in typesetting, publications and graphic design. The merger would better position both companies toward publishing its own energy management wholesale catalog. Throughout the years our company has slowly developed its diversification to better serve our customers. 1983
J. Harper Powell formed Expression In Type, Inc., on May 6th, 1983 primarily to publish a wholesale catalog to sell energy management products.
1987
J. Harper Powell formed Environmental Controls Services on April 1st, 1987 primarily to sell, service and install energy management systems, as well as pneumatic, electric and electronic temperature control systems in the Hampton Roads area.
1989
On December 31st, 1989 , Environmental Controls Services merged with Expressions In Type, Inc. The new Virginia Corporation began trading as ECS Controls, Inc.
1994
ECS Controls, Inc. grew to become the largest independently owned and operated energy management contractor in the southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina region.
1996
In January, the Corporation moved into our present facility located at the intersection of Providence Road and Reon Drive in Virginia Beach . The purchase of this building provided us with the necessary facilities to enter into our growth stage.
1997
ECS Controls, Inc. expanded its operation by starting up a subsidiary company called "The Energy Management Warehouse", a licensed wholesale business. The wholesale business brought together within one location a marketing strategy to demonstrate and sell consolidated products such as individual wholesale products as well as energy management systems.
1998
ECS Controls, Inc. began servicing HVAC equipment. This was a natural expansion phase for us since we were already servicing the controls for the HVAC equipment. We further added remote reporting capabilities, filter-scheduling change-out as well as programmed maintenance and full service contracts.
1999
The Corporation began educating its staff and learning Electronic Security Systems, Card Access Control, Intrusion Detection and Video CCTV Surveillance. The Corporation became fully licensed in the state of Virginia offering high-end Electronic Security Systems along with our Energy Management Systems.
2000
In the year 2000, we launched our first corporate web site and begin the creation of our web-based wholesale catalog. We also moved toward standard Communication Network Systems as a focus toward expanding our operations. Expanding our knowledge on other industry communication systems allows us more options to solving our customer's needs. The standardization of a common Communication Network System is just another service we can offer to our customers who are looking to save money on their installation cost for network systems and building automation without locking into a proprietary system.
2001
Building Automation through Systems Integration became our focus in 2001. We grew from a state licensed Energy Management contractor to a fully licensed contractor in Mechanical Systems, Electrical Systems, Electronic Security Systems, Commercial Improvements, and Home Improvements. This allowed us to offer our customers one company to install, service and repair all their existing building renovation needs. The benefit to our customers is reduced installation programming and operating cost.
2002
Web-base facilities operations became our focal point toward providing better service to our customers. This access-from-anywhere capabilities over the Internet allows our customers to access building data from any personal computer to provide real time proof of the success or failure of their building's performance.
2003
The Corporation became fully qualified to sell, service and install Fire Alarm Systems. This was a natural expansion phase for us to include Fire Alarm Systems into our Systems Integration plan.
2004
The Corporation became fully qualified to sell, service and install Backup Power (Generators) Systems (BPS). This again was a natural expansion phase for us to include BPS into our Systems Integration plan.
2005
"Intelligent Solutions for Intelligent Buildings™" became our new Mission Statement for the future. It presents a unique challenge, because in order to offer "Intelligent Solutions for Intelligent Buildings™" we must first better understand the opportunity of industry knowledge and new technologies for ourselves and for our customers. We must go where we have never gone and do what we have never done in order to help our customers acquire new technologies to truly meet their needs and protect their bottom line. We plan to protect our client's bottom line while accommodating for tomorrows growth. To support this effort, we made major revisions to our web-site to make it more educational for our readers.
Today
ECS Controls, Inc. is a fully licensed and bonded "Class A" contractor in the state of Virginia . We are also a state certified Electronic Security System provider by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS#11-3555). Our subsidiary company "The Energy Management Warehouse" is fully licensed as a wholesale operation. We are System Integrators for Energy, Lighting, Security, Fire Alarm and other building systems. We provide Programmed Maintenance and Full Service Maintenance on all HVAC and refrigeration equipment as well as the other building systems. With today's integration and interoperability of open systems plus connectivity using Internet access and web services, the intelligence in our buildings is limited only to our imagination. We make web based information and real time integration come alive with seamless connection to client's enterprise network. We intend to grow our vision by extending the quality and customer satisfaction of the construction, service and wholesale divisions into a competent, responsive and competitively priced full service business with emphasis on customer satisfaction.
